Part 6: Farm pollution, pig pollution, incinerator pollution, plastics
“What you don’t know won’t hurt you,” my grandfather used to tell me. “Leave well enough alone and you’ll get along better in this world.”
That sage advice used to work back in the 20th century, but not today. None of us can take for granted in the 21st century that others, in responsible positions, will do the right thing by all of us. After reading Part 5 of this series, countless Americans could not comprehend how fellow citizens in high positions of trust, and knowing the incredible toxic danger of radioactive and mustard gas waste—still dumped millions of tons of it into our oceans over the decades!
Back in the 1960s, our “What you don’t know won’t hurt you” naiveté began to backfire as cancers leaped into the national consciousness. Soon, in the 1970s, we created the Environmental Protection Agency to combat horrific toxic dump sites where rivers ignited in flames and fish died by the millions—but then, instead of “out of sight, out of mind”, the poisons came home to roost in our back yards.
In “America’s nastiest toxic waste dumps” by Chris Weber, he said, “Superfund is both an actual fund and a shorthand term for the list of America’s nastiest toxic waste sites. One in two Americans lives within ten miles of a Superfund site. Currently, there are about 1,300 sites on the list. New Jersey has the most Superfund sites, with over a hundred. Nevada and the District of Columbia have one apiece. Here’s a closer look at some of the notable ones.”
Love Canal is the granddaddy of Superfund sites. “Spurred by Love Canal, Congress levied a special tax on oil and chemical companies to clean up such sites,” said Weber. “It raised $1.8 billion—plenty, they assumed, to clean up all the toxic waste in the country. But as more and more toxic sites were identified—at one point, 30,000 were nominated.”
“Though New Jersey has the most Superfund sites, the most polluted place in the nation may be Anniston, Alabama, where Monsanto ran a huge chemical manufacturing plant,” said Weber. “The company paid out $700 million to residents in 2003.”

“If The Hague had a list of chemical war criminals, the dozen POPs chemicals—chlordane, heptachlor, aldrin, dieldrin, mirex, DDT, hexachlorobenzene, toxaphene, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and furans—would be on it,” said Schapiro. “Twenty years ago, the Pesticide Action Network dubbed the pesticides on this list part of the “dirty dozen” and the name stuck.”
“Over half a century, hundreds of millions of tons of these chemicals have been sprayed from nozzles, coated onto seeds, and leaked from factories and waste dumps into the soil and water supply. One of those chemicals, the pesticide DDT, wreaked such damage to the ecosystem that biologist Rachel Carson was prompted to write Silent Spring, a book that helped trigger the rise of today’s environmental movement.”

COAL BURNING AND MERCURY CONTAMINATION OF OUR SKIES AND RIVERS
A Free Library informational article said, “Some 60,000 U.S. children are born each year with developmental impairments triggered by fetal exposure to methyl mercury, usually as a result of their moms having eaten tainted fish. To limit the rain of mercury from human activities, regulators have focused on curbing emissions of inorganic mercury from coal burning. However, Lindberg notes, although chemists assumed that mercury could become methylated in the air, they couldn't show it.”
PVC: THE POISON PLASTIC
“What’s so bad about PVC plastic?” you ask.
“Unlike the many plastics made without chlorine, PVC poses serious environmental health threats from the start,” reported at www.chej.org. “The production of PVC requires the manufacture of raw chemicals, including highly polluting chlorine, and cancer-causing vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and ethylene dichloride (EDC). Communities surrounding U.S. vinyl chloride chemical facilities, half of which are in Louisiana, suffer from serious toxic chemical pollution of their groundwater supplies, surface waters and air.
Residents of the town of Mossville, Louisiana had dioxin levels in their blood that were three times higher than normal.”
Another aspect of plastic’s dangerous side effects stems from citizens unknowingly drinking from plastic bottles where the plastic chemicals leach into the liquid. Additionally, many citizens microwave their food inside plastic containers that also leach into the food—slowly poisoning the individual.
TOXIC AIR EMISSIONS ALL OVER THE USA
Jonathan Campbell at http://www.cqs.com/emswburn.htm, said, “Incinerators represent a special environmental threat, because the combustion process releases and combines toxic materials in household and medical waste into super-toxic air emissions and tons of super-toxic ash. It is also a wasteful technology, as it destroys a huge source of reusable and recyclable materials. Overall, the typical volume reduction accomplished by incinerators is 60-70 percent, which could be accomplished easily and cleanly by comprehensive recycling.
“The EPA estimates that more than 80 percent of the dioxin produced in the U.S. is from municipal and medical waste incinerator air emissions. Tons of mercury, lead, and other heavy metals are emitted in vapor form as well from incinerator stacks. "Modern" pollution controls on these poison factories just move some of the toxic emissions from the air to the ash.
“Incineration is really a hoax: it does not even eliminate landfills. Ash landfills (called monofills) are far more dangerous and toxic than raw trash landfills. Incinerator ash is extremely hazardous, containing dioxin and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. Ash landfills are a legacy of poison that must be monitored for eternity. They never can become non-toxic, because most of the toxic materials in them - the heavy metals - do not bio-degrade.”
LIFESTOCK POLLUTION AND WATER POLLUTION
• Huge open-air waste lagoons, often as big as several football fields, are prone to leaks and spills. In 1995 an eight-acre hog-waste lagoon in North Carolina burst, spilling 25 million gallons of manure into the New River. The spill killed about 10 million fish and closed 364,000 acres of coastal wetlands to shell fishing.
• From 1995 to 1998, 1,000 spills or pollution incidents occurred at livestock feedlots in 10 states and 200 manure-related fish kills resulted in the death of 13 million fish.
• Runoff of chicken and hog waste from factory farms in Maryland and North Carolina is believed to have contributed to outbreaks of Pfiesteria piscicida, killing millions of fish and causing skin irritation, short-term memory loss and other cognitive problems in local people.
• Nutrients in animal waste cause algal blooms, which use up oxygen in the water, contributing to a "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico where there's not enough oxygen to support aquatic life. The dead zone fluctuates in size each year, extending over 5,800 square miles during the summer of 2004 and stretching over 7,700 square miles during the summer of 1999. [Latest reports show that zone at 10,000 square miles in 2010]
These days, my grandfather would have to retract his words because they no longer apply to 21st century America. Again, I ask you dear reader, what do you think will happen to our environment and quality of life in the United States of America with another added 100 million people? At some point, all this poisoning of our natural world will return to our children and other living creatures in accelerating and decidedly nasty ways.

PART 4: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA—NOBODY EVER DIES OF OVERPOPULATION

Following the recent loss of life in Haiti, Chile and China due to earthquakes or the loss of life from Hurricane Katrina or the tsunami that killed 100,000 in Sri Lanka in 2005—it reminds me of a 39 year old column by the late Dr. Garrett Hardin: “Nobody ever dies of overpopulation.” It is reprinted with permission from Science, 12 February 1971, Volume 171, Number 3971, © 1971 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. (www.thesocialcontract.com ) Professor Hardin taught in the biology department of the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Not mentioned, but increasing in numbers as the human race accelerates its own populations across the globe—an astounding 18 million human beings starve to death or die of starvation related diseases every year. (Source: World Health Organization) The breakdown: eight million adults and 10 million children perish at the hands of starvation annually. Fully 1.5 to 2.0 billion humans subsist on less than $2.00 per day. That same number cannot obtain a clean glass of drinking water.
For example: India sports 1.16 billion people. Out of that number, nearly one million do not possess a toilet to use, so they squat onto the land every day. They contaminate ground water, lakes and rivers with their human waste. The Ganges runs in raw sewage 24/7 and its dead zone expands to over 10,000 square miles—contaminating and killing ocean life. Result: 1,000 Indian children die of diarrhea, dysentery and other water borne diseases—DAILY. Yet, Indians do not practice birth control as they add another 12 to 15 million people annually on their way to surpassing current-day China and hit 1.55 billion in 40 years.
For whatever reason, Americans as well as citizens of many countries never make the connection of overpopulation and their vulnerability—to disease, famine and Mother’s Nature’s rage. Nature thrives on destruction, i.e., hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, earthquakes, forest fires, famines, hail, tornadoes and epidemics.
INCREASING HUMAN NUMBERS ON EARTH CREATES GREATER SCENARIOS FOR MASS HUMAN DEATHS
For some reason, call it hubris or “false pride”; or massive ignorance or ethnocentrism—Americans cannot and do not think they would ever find themselves on the receiving end of water shortages, food scarcities or energy deficiencies. Thus, they happily grow their numbers, by adding 3.1 million people annually, ironically, mostly through other humans fleeing overpopulation pressures worldwide.
Dr. Hardin brings home our dilemma:
“Those of us who are deeply concerned about population and the environment —"eco-nuts," we're called, — are accused of seeing herbicides in trees, pollution in running brooks, radiation in rocks, and overpopulation everywhere. There is merit in the accusation.
“I was in Calcutta when the cyclone struck East Bengal in November 1970. Early dispatches spoke of 15,000 dead, but the estimates rapidly escalated to 2,000,000 and then dropped back to 500,000. A nice round number: it will do as well as any, for we will never know. The nameless ones who died, "unimportant" people far beyond the fringes of the social power structure, left no trace of their existence. Pakistani parents repaired the population loss
in just 40 days, and the world turned its attention to other matters.
“What killed those unfortunate people? “The cyclone,” newspapers said. But one can just as logically say that overpopulation killed them. The Gangetic Delta is barely above sea level. Every year several thousand people are killed in quite ordinary storms. If Pakistan were not overcrowded, no sane man would bring his family to such a place. Ecologically speaking, a
delta belongs to the river and the sea; man obtrudes there at his peril.
“In the web of life every event has many antecedents. Only by an arbitrary decision can we designate a single antecedent as "cause." Our choice is biased — biased to protect our egos against the onslaught of unwelcome truths. As T.S. Eliot put it in Burnt Norton:
“Go, go, go,” said the bird, “Human kind cannot bear very much reality.”
“Were we to identify overpopulation as the cause of a half-million deaths, we would threaten ourselves with a question to which we do not know the answer: How can we control population without recourse to repugnant measures? Fearfully we close our minds to an inventory of possibilities. Instead, we say that a cyclone caused the deaths, thus relieving ourselves of responsibility for this and future catastrophes. "Fate" is so comforting.
“Every year we list tuberculosis, leprosy, enteric diseases, or animal parasites as the "cause of death" of millions of people. It is well known that malnutrition is an important antecedent of death in all these categories; and that malnutrition is connected with overpopulation. But overpopulation is not called the cause of death. We cannot bear the thought.
“People are dying now of respiratory diseases in Tokyo, Birmingham, and Gary, because of the "need" for more industry. The "need" for more food justifies over fertilization of the land, leading to eutrophication of the waters, and lessened fish production — which leads to more "need" for food.
“What will we say when the power shuts down some fine summer on our eastern seaboard and several thousand people die of heat prostration? Will we blame the weather? Or the power companies for not building enough generators? Or the eco-nuts for insisting on pollution controls?
“One thing is certain: we won't blame the deaths on overpopulation. No one ever dies of overpopulation. It is unthinkable.”
As Hardin said, we abhor dealing with reality. In fact, in Joel Kotkin’s recent book, he ‘celebrates’ adding 100 million people to the United States as if it amounts to a “Red Badge of Courage” in a diminishing world. He speaks on NPR with glowing reviews from Jennifer Ludden. He enjoys interviews in papers as he crosses the country to pitch his book. He leads Americans down a primrose path of more denial, stupidity and ignorance of their predicament.
Yet, they fully embrace his message. Should he strut his book in Bangladesh, that grows by six children a minute, with a population of 144 million people in a landmass the size of Iowa, they would toss tomatoes into his face. Change that! They would eat the tomatoes and throw sticks! Reality has already manifested in very ugly ways for the people of Bangladesh. They live in pure daily human misery with no way out! They live in what Kotkin celebrates: overpopulation.

PART 3: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA—1,700 PEOPLE ADDED TO CALIFORNIA DAILY

The United States adds 8,490 people, net gain, every day of the year. That equals 3.1 million annually. That equates to 100 million added by 2035 at current immigration-driven growth rates.
Ironically, since 1970, American females enjoyed an average birth rate of 2.03 children. The great “Zero Population Growth” message of the 60s made an impact, but, to counter it with more people, in 1965,Congress passed a sweeping mass immigration bill that remains in force today. That bill added 100 million people to the USA within 40 years. And, true to form, 100,000 immigrants land on American soil every 30 days without pause, 12 months a year, year in and year out, decade in and decade out.
While we grapple with accelerating environmental, bloated cities and quality of life issues, not to mention water and energy—we continue adding more and more millions of people without a clue or a plan as to what to do when we max out and exceed our carrying capacity. In fact, we already exceed it beyond anyone’s comprehension as you will discover in this series.
At the University of Colorado, Dr. Albert Bartlett said, “Can you think of any problem, on any scale, from microscopic to global, whose long-term solution is in any demonstrable way, aided, assisted, or advanced, by having continued population growth—at the local level, the state level, the national level, or globally?”

At the 2009 Copenhagen Conference on climate change, the brilliant author of, Peak Everything: facing a century of declines, Richard Heinberg said, "...the discussions in Denmark took place in a conceptual fantasy world in which climate change is the only global crisis that matters much; in which rapid economic growth is still an option; in which fossil fuels are practically limitless; in which a western middle class staring at the prospect of penury can be persuaded voluntarily to transfer a significant portion of its rapidly evaporating wealth to other nations; and in which the subject of human overpopulation can barely be mentioned... it's no wonder more wasn't achieved in Copenhagen.”
From our swollen eastern seaboard, let’s travel 3,000 miles across America’s heartland to the former land of milk and honey: California. That state, at 38 million people and bursting at its demographic seams with water shortages, energy problems, toxic air and eternal gridlocked traffic—adds an extra 1,700 people daily! With that, California adds another 400 vehicles to its already clogged roads each day. It destroys over 250,000 acres of land turned into real estate annually. California adds 600,000 more people annually on its way to adding 20 million more within three decades. Can you fathom what their children will face in a blink of time? PART 1: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA--OUR PERILOUS FUTURE

In the early years of the 21st century, the United States continues on a course toward adding another 100 million people by 2035. (Source: “US Population Projections” by Fogel/Martin, PEW Report, U.S. Census Bureau) Beyond that, population projections show America doubling its current populace to 600 million in the latter half of this century. At the same time, the world demographic figures show an added three billion humans to planet Earth by 2050.
With accelerating ‘symptoms’ exploding across America and the world via water and food shortages, species extinction rates, energy crises, climate destabilization, ocean dead zones and more ramifications on multiple levels—we find ourselves passengers within a civilization that parallels the metaphor of the Titanic. If you remember, on April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic, the finest steamship of its era, on its maiden voyage, sped too fast and arrogantly through iceberg infested waters of the North Atlantic. It hit one and sank—to become one of the greatest tragedies that didn’t have to happen in the 20th century.
Our own grave overpopulation crisis need not manifest within the United States, either, if we change course. Like Captain Edward John Smith of the Titanic, he could have slowed down or steamed further south to avoid his fate.
The United States could also change course and avoid adding 100 million people within the next 25 years. However, no American leaders step up to the microphone with any concern. The passengers of our American civilization continue ‘trusting’ their leaders similarly to the passengers on the Titanic. “Captain Smith knows what he is doing,” they said. “Our U.S. Congress and president must know what they are doing,” citizens lament.
But like Titanic’s Captain Smith, the U.S. Congress and president of the United States—don’t know what they are doing.
This 30 part series will explain exactly what few Americans understand as well as the accelerating ramifications of adding 100 million people to the USA in 25 years. It crackles with messages of political, economic and religious conflict and, when tensions build and words fail, as they often do, violence is visited by one group upon another. If that were not enough, our planet shudders from spasms with changes in technology, population, wealth distribution and our natural environment.”
You may notice newspapers, environmental magazines like Sierra Club and National Public Radio addressing growing ‘symptoms’ brought about by overpopulation. But, you will never hear them connect the dots as to hyper-population growth. In fact, they avoid any mention of their ‘sacred cow’ of our world filled with too many people. Obviously, religious, political and racial ramifications enter into the passions of this issue.
In the 16th century, men like Galileo found themselves under house arrest via the Catholic Church, because they ‘bucked’ the conventional wisdom with their research. They called him a “heretic.” Ultimately, the Pope lost because Galileo proved that the earth revolved around the sun. Today, if anyone speaks up against mass immigration into the United Kingdom, France, Holland, Canada or the United States—the term “racist” echoes from every quarter.
Ironically, those immigrants flee overpopulated countries where average annual death rates from starvation and related diseases exceed 18 million people. (Source: World Health Organization) Worse, third world countries add 77 million people net gain annually to our finite planet. Thus, they form an endless line of desperate refugees. In the end, Mother Nature doesn’t care about anyone’s race, creed or color—she’s an equal opportunity grim reaper for anyone that exceeds carrying capacity.

PART 2: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA—FROG IN THE POT METAPHOR

From 1964 to 2006, the United States, via mass immigration, grew from 193 million to 300 million. It added over 100 million people in a 40 year span. Today, America stands at 309 million people in 2010. It adds 3.1 million people annually. It races toward adding 100 million people by 2035—a scant 25 years from now.
In many ways, the American public cannot fathom its own critical condition as to overpopulation. Americans charged onto the North American continent with unlimited topsoil, trees, fresh water, resources and unimaginable spaces.
If truth be told, the Native Americans kept it perfectly intact for thousands of years of ecological balance and harmony. They also kept their own numbers in equilibrium with nature. Birds, ducks, geese, deer and buffalo numbered in the millions while clear skies and crystal clean streams offered unlimited food, shelter and clothing.
But starting in 1850, Europeans fled from potato famines, wars and diseases to stampede into America by the millions. They brought horses, farms, locomotives, chemicals, booze, diseases, factories and the Industrial Revolution with them. They blasted, mined, poisoned and trashed the national landscape. If you look along America’s highways, lakes, streams and farms, you will see billions of pieces of trash and dumps covering the land. Americans individually or collectively show no responsibility for picking up after themselves.
Over the last 150 years, Americans enjoyed no end to water, energy and resources. A sense of cultural ‘entitlement’ runs through this society with the idea that all these resources available today will be there tomorrow.
A CULTURAL PARADIGM OF NO END TO PLENTY OF EVERYTHING
Four things operate in the American mind in the 21st century: 1. Religion promotes “Go forth multiply and take dominion over the land.” 2. Capitalism promotes unlimited growth, production and consumption—that demands ever increasing human population expansion. 3. No limits to water, energy and resources. 4. Technology will solve any problem.
Man! Are we in for a rude awakening or what?! One look at one billion humans living in misery and squalor around the planet today renders a hint and harbinger as to America’s future.
Jared Diamond’s book, Collapse: How societies choose to fail or succeed, offers a sobering reality check to those four aforementioned myths. “In his brilliantly written Collapse, Diamond examines in fascinating historic detail why past societies succeeded or failed. AMNESTY ASSURED TO CREATE ADDED ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

A recent Zogby International discovered that, “…people in Mexico think that granting legal status to illegal immigrants would encourage more illegal immigration to the United States. As the top immigrant-sending country for both legal and illegal immigrants, views on immigration in Mexico can provide insight into the likely impact of an amnesty.”
I spent last weekend in Washington, DC meeting with Dr. Steve Camarata and Mark Krikorian at www.cis.org . You may find the results with Dr. Steve Camarata at: Center for Immigration Studies' website.
Among the findings:
• A clear majority of people in Mexico, 56 percent, thought giving legal status to illegal immigrants in the United States would make it more likely that people they know would go to the United States illegally. Just 17 percent thought it would make Mexicans less likely to go illegally.
• Of Mexicans with a member of their immediate household in the United States, 65 percent said a legalization program would make people they know more likely to go to America illegally.
• Two-thirds of Mexicans know someone living in the United States; one-third said an immediate member of their household was living in the United States.
• Interest in going to the United States remains strong even in the current recession, with 36 percent of Mexicans (39 million people) saying they would move to the United States if they could. This is consistent with a recent Pew Research Center poll which found that about one-third of Mexicans would go to the United States if they could. At present, 12 to 13 million Mexico-born people live in the United States.
• An overwhelming majority (69 percent) thought that the primary loyalty of Mexican-Americans (Mexico- and U.S.-born) should be to Mexico. Just 20 percent said it should be to the United States.
• Also, 69 percent of people in Mexico felt that the Mexican government should represent the interests of Mexican-Americans (Mexico- and U.S.-born) in the United States.
• A plurality, 39 percent, of Mexicans thought that in the last year fewer people they know had gone to the United States as illegal immigrants compared to previous years. Only 27 percent thought more had gone.
• A plurality, 40 percent, also thought that in the last year more of the illegal immigrants they know had returned to Mexico compared to previous years. Only 25 percent thought the number returning had fallen.
• Both the bad economy and increased immigration enforcement were cited as reasons fewer people were going to America as illegal immigrants and more were coming back to Mexico.
Krikorian said, “As the nation begins debates the issue of immigration, the perspective of people in Mexico is important because Mexico is the top sending country for both legal and illegal immigrants. In 2008 one of six new legal immigrants was from Mexico and, according to the Department of Homeland Security, 6 out of 10 illegal immigrants come from that country. Asking people in Mexico their views on immigration can provide insight into the likely impact of an amnesty for illegal immigrants and other questions related to immigration.”
Dr. Camarata reported, “This survey is the first to ask people in Mexico if they thought legalizing illegal immigrants in the United States would encourage more illegal immigration. The survey was conducted in August and September of 2009 and consisted of 1,004 in-person interviews of adults throughout Mexico. The findings show that a majority of people in Mexico think that an amnesty would make it more likely that people in Mexico would come to the United States illegally. This is especially true for people who have a member of their households living in the United States. It is important to note that respondents were asked specifically about whether an amnesty would make illegal immigration more likely, not just immigration generally. Other questions in the survey explore attitudes about migration to United States generally, recent trends in migration, and loyalty to the United States.
“The results may give pause to those lawmakers who think that an amnesty/legalization for illegals immigrants would reduce illegal immigration in the future. The findings of this survey indicate that an amnesty would encourage more illegal immigration, at least from Mexico.”
While the political winds blow toward a new amnesty against the American people by the representatives elected to work in their interest, these findings illustrate the human juggernaut Americans face with any amnesty. Demographic projections show Mexico adding 40 million more people to their population by 2050. If they cannot sustain them in 2009, you can bet millions of poor along with other migrants around the world cannot help but see a green light to overload Americans shores with sheer numbers.
With California already sinking into water shortages, air polluted cities, electrical shortages, gridlocked roads and worse—can they survive their projected added 20 million people to hit 58 million in 30 years? Can the USA withstand the projected 70 million immigrants within 30 years?

TEMPORAL BLINDNESS AND OVERPOPULATION IN AMERICA

Cap and trade? Will it work? Not a chance! Screw in a mercury, curly-cue bulb to save electricity! Will that stop carbon emissions? Sorry! Drive a Prius for greater fuel efficiency? Only delays the inevitable! Add more lanes to Los Angeles’ freeways to solve gridlock? That’s like a four hundred pound man facing a heart attack—unbuckling his belt to allow more room for his bulging belly. That’s a tragic choice!
“TEMPORAL BLINDNESS is a limitation in cognitive process. People with temporal blindness cannot gather and process available information into predictions of future conditions. Their processes cannot connect future conditions to a causing behavior.
When their processes do create unpleasant predictions, and identify the causal behavior, they fail to create enough present meaning for the future conditions to motivate a change in that behavior.” Dr. Jack Alpert
In a brilliant essay, Dr. Jack Alpert, www.skil.org, introduced a new concept for Americans to consider: “Why do we need rapid population decline?”
The first question you might consider stems from our civilization that grew population every year for over 400 years. How will you stop that kind of a cultural juggernaut? Simple: either we do it or Mother Nature will! And, Mother Nature always bats last.
“Everyone knows population-increase grows cities and crowds freeways,” Dr. Alpert said. “As a result freeways get wider and cities get bigger. Everyone knows that if city dwellers want bigger cars or houses, cities and freeways grow even if the population doesn’t.
“Hard to grasp is that city growth requires more square miles of ocean and farm land to feed its dwellers. Cities need more water to flush its toilets and water its lawns. Farms need more land and water to feed city people. Cities need more energy to heat homes, run transport and support goods and services.”
Alpert points out that what you see at first glance is not the real problem. Like an iceberg, with 92 percent of its volume below the water, the actual human predicament is 10 times bigger than our first estimate.
“Cities already consume 75 percent of the resources of humankind,” Alpert said. “Farm land is finite. Oil reservoirs, aquifers and rain are finite. Places to put waste are finite. Mined resources like soils and iron are finite.
“There is a whole web of life from bacteria to polar bears that share this finite environment. When humans usurp their space and resources, they are extinguished. Loss of diversity threatens the ecological system.”

“When there are relatively few cities and a lot of unallocated global resources, city growth appears to have no limits,” said Alpert. “But when the support for all these cities equals the environment's abilities to produce, one city must compete with another for scarce resources. “Conflict consumes resources. This leaves less resources to support cities. Which increases scarcity. Which increases competition. Which increases conflict. Which diverts more resources away from supporting cities. The circular process causes civilization to experience a death spiral.
“Two possible approaches to keep scarcity of goods and services from triggering collapse of civilization. One increases global carrying capacity with technological efficiency and substitution. The other constrains total human footprint.
“Many people think these dangers can be avoided by a combination of technological expansion and population stabilization. However, even with a cessation of population growth technological expansion is facing a very large task.
“First, because we don't know how close the current human footprint is to the globe's limits. Some would say we have overshot them at present technology and are depleting fish stocks, oil reservoirs, aquifers, and damaging climate.
“And second total human footprint would still continue to grow because 80% of today's global population, the poor, consume at a rate of 1/8 to 1/16 of that consumed by the 20%, who are wealthy. We should expect these have-nots to increase their consumption. If they doubled that consumption every twenty five years, It would take a century or more for them to catch up with the haves and it would quadruple the total human footprint and the technologist's challenge.
“In addition to the poor's increase in consumption the haves will increase their wellbeing. The goods and services required by even a constant population will likely double every 20 years for centuries.
“If we are counting on technology to protect us from the vagaries of scarcity, it will have to double global production of goods and services (with fixed land and less dense energy) every 20 years for centuries.
“Any technological shortcomings will have to be addressed by constraints on total human footprint. At first this might be viewed as capping the excesses of the rich. However, if improved health care increases longevity that increases footprint and it has nothing to do with excesses.
“Since total human footprint is the product of population times per capita consumption, any improvement in wellbeing will have to be matched with reductions in population. Even an improvement in healthcare requires a decrease in population.
“If we expect a doubling of human footprint every twenty years, and technology fails to keep up then the prevention of scarcity must be addressed with a halving of the population every 20 years.
“Rapid population decline (RPD) appears to be "the" path to a viable future for our kids, our nation, humankind, and our ecosystem.
“Rapid population decline (RPD) occurs only when deaths greatly exceed births. The three mechanisms for having deaths exceed births are:
1) deprivation (starvation or disease,)
2) genocide, and or
3) birth rates far below two per woman.
“The challenge that confronts us is, "Can we engineer a future with lesser amounts of RPD caused by deprivation and genocide and more RPD caused by lower births?"
(1) Many answers to the following questions justify a shift in emphasis from current proposals that address visible problems (eco destruction, resource exhaustion and social inequity) to RPD proposals that produce civilization viability.
1. What is the carrying capacity that is divided between humans and other species?
2. How much and how fast can carrying capacity drop?
3. When will carrying capacity drop?
4. If billions are living hand to mouth on a dollar
or two a day, how fast can a doubling of food costs (demand over supply) put billions on a death diet?
5. How long can/will the rich keep the poor from starvation using redistribution?
6. When it is obvious that redistribution will not satisfy the starving hordes and inhibit their social conflict, how long will it be before the rich or powerful resolve their desperation with genocide?
Another question Dr. Alpert asked, “How fast can a lower birthrate reduce the population?"

HOW LONG BEFORE WE BECOME A NATION OF 50 CALIFORNIAS?

While you discovered the dreary reality of Detroit, Michigan—that’s only one American city! Commensurately—Miami, Chicago, Houston, New York, Los Angeles and others follow toward a range of similar futures.
Ask yourself, with 15 million Americans unemployed and 35 million subsisting on food stamps, does it make sense to import 160,000 legal immigrants into this country every 30 days and a total of 1.5 million plus annually? Especially when those immigrants cost American taxpayers (you) a total of $346 billion in resettling services across 15 federal agencies annually?
At this point in time, with 10 million legal and unlawful immigrants, California suffers a $24 billion debt. It cannot pay its bills. It sinks deeper into collapse as it adds 1,700 people per day, every day of the year.

In a brilliant expose’ famed economist Edwin Rubenstein wrote, “As California Goes - Facts behind California’s Fiscal Meltdown.” (Volume 19, Number 4, summer 2009, www.thesocialcontract.com)
In it, Rubenstein illustrates California’s plight as the canary in the coal mine.
Why California?
“The state’s top income tax rate—10.3 percent—is the highest in the nation, and this surely explains why the richest 1 percent of residents end up contributing half of all the personal income taxes the state collects,” Rubenstein said. “Even the state sales tax rate—a poor man’s levy—is well above the national average.
“The usual suspects—high spending and low taxes—are not to blame. In their place stands something far more fundamental: demographic change. An ever-growing share of California residents are immigrants. The vast majority of immigrants are from Latin America (56 percent) and Asia (35 percent). They are generally young, poorly educated, and mired in low-income jobs that do not provide health insurance. Their English is often rudimentary. They depend on state social services at far higher rates than natives or earlier immigrant cohorts.”
A whopping third of California’s immigrants entered unlawfully! At least half of them work off the books thereby not paying any taxes into the system, but their children tap into education, food and health care at an astounding cost to the state. In the last eight years, 86 hospitals and ER wards bankrupted out of business.
“Latino families are larger than those of other immigrant groups. Their children swell elementary schools but are less likely than other groups to graduate high school or finish college,” Rubenstein said. “Second-generation Latinos are also less likely to grow up with two parents, and more likely to go to jail or become teenage mothers.
“Many observers—including prominent Latin Americans—have concluded that the same traditional values that lie behind Latin America’s difficulties in achieving prosperity and political stability are being substantially perpetuated among Hispanic immigrants and their descendants in California. This implies that the problem is primarily cultural, not economic, and that fiscal measures alone will not suffice to solve it.”
California’s Immigration Tsunami
“Between 1970 and 2006 the number of California residents born abroad increased by more than five-fold, from 1.8 million to 9.9 million,” said Rubenstein. “Currently the state has a much higher share of immigrants in its population than the U.S. as a whole.”
For more than a century California has set the immigration trend for the nation:
“Using official state figures, demographer Leon Bouvier concluded that immigration accounts directly and indirectly for 98 percent of California’s population growth between 1990 and 2002. Direct immigration contributed 57 percent of the rise, while the rest came from births to foreign-born women,” said Rubenstein. “Behind the headline statistics are two telling factoids. First, net migration from other states has virtually ceased. Traffic congestion, schools, the water crisis, the state’s fiscal meltdown, are all a big turn-off to citizens of other, less troubled parts of the country.
“Second, the average California mother is expected to give birth to 2.1 children over her lifetime. This is the so-called “replacement” fertility rate which, if sustained over time, will result in a stable population. The devil is in the details: established residents and immigrants from non-Hispanic groups —Asians, Blacks, Whites, American Indians, and Pacific Islanders—are all reproducing at below replacement rates. Hispanic mothers, by contrast, are on course to have 3.25 children over their reproductive lifetimes.”
The Immigration Deficit
Once upon a time political correctness did not prevent Californians from discussing the fiscal burden imposed by illegal aliens. In the early 1990s California faced a sinking economy not unlike today’s. Social welfare caseloads exploded, state revenue declined by more than 25 percent, and the state’s budget deficit was an unprecedented one-third of total general fund spending.
“Caseloads continued rising even after the recession ended, a trend many officials blamed on illegal immigrants,” said Rubenstein. “In 1993 California Gov. Pete Wilson sued the federal government for the costs of state services to illegals—widely estimated at $2 billion ($2.9 billion in 2009 dollars)—arguing that Washington mandated the provision of such services while failing to prevent the illegal influx. Five other magnet states—Arizona, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Texas—joined the suit.
“The issue propelled the drafting of Proposition 187, a state initiative denying certain services to illegal aliens. A firestorm ensued. Besides racism and anti-Latino bias, immigrant groups charged the Wilson administration with grossly exaggerating the net cost of illegal aliens on the state’s budget.”
The 1994 study found that the 1.7 million illegal aliens then residing in California and their U.S.-born children:
● Received $4.3 billion in state services
● Paid $739 million in state taxes
● Received about $3.6 billion more than they paid in taxes.
“K-12 education is the largest state expenditure, accounting for 40 percent of the budget,” Rubenstein said. “Enrollments have increased dramatically since 1994, swelled primarily by Hispanic immigrants and their U.S.-born children. Consider this: between 1994 and 2005 California K-12 enrollment grew by 1,054,806; Hispanic student enrollment rose by 1,009,489, accounting for 96 percent of the total increase. White enrollment declined by 246,220 students over the same period.” (See article.)
California Is Our Canary
California still has the nation’s largest immigrant population. But its lead is shrinking: In 1994 32 percent of the nation’s foreign-born lived in California; today about 26 percent do. Only 17 percent of immigrants arriving in the U.S. between 2005 to 2006 settled in California.
“Unfortunately, the same social pathologies that attend the foreign-born in California travel to other U.S. destinations,” said Rubenstein. “In every instance immigrants are, on average, poorer than natives, more dependent on public largesse, more likely to require remedial education, less likely to finish high school, and more likely to evade taxation and to be incarcerated. Throughout the nation native-born citizens are digging ever deeper into their pockets to subsidize public services for immigrants.”

PEDAL TO THE METAL: SPEEDING INTO A STOP SIGN WITHOUT BRAKES

Americans, led by their indolent politicians, step on the population gas pedal at full bore into the 21st century without a map, route, plan or clue as to how they will solve their own accelerating human population numbers.
In excess of 150 million Americans live and breathe toxic air in overloaded cities. They grind their way through gridlocked traffic five days a week. They kill 44,000 fellow citizens annually in car accidents from clogged highways. Their rivers run with chemicals, fertilizers, herbicides, sewage and other contaminants enough to create 10,000 square mile dead zones where they empty into our oceans. They suffer water shortages so much so, that they completely deplete the Colorado River before it reaches the Pacific. Americans use so many chemicals to grow food; their acidified soils become more unhealthy and toxic to angleworms and nitro-fixing bacteria with each passing year.
Those chemicals in the air, soil and water create millions of cancer deaths annually around the world. Yet, no one advocates banning the contamination of this planet for future generations or the welfare of all other life on Earth.
All the while, humans burn through non-renewable resources such as oil, natural gas, minerals and metals as if there were no tomorrow. While every scientific indicator shows human activity destabilizing Earth’s climate—leaders admonish citizens to change their lights to the curly-cue mercury energy saving lights—as if THAT will solve our dilemma.
While American citizens suffer 15 million unemployed and 35 million subsisting on food stamps as well as 13.4 million Americans living in poverty—our U.S. Congress imports 160,000 foreign workers into this country every 30 days, month in and month out, year in and year out. All total, the U.S. adds 3.1 million more humans, net gain, annually on its way to adding 100 million people by 2035.
While that certain insanity continues, not one congressional member, media outlet or environmental organization addresses the obvious: we exhaust Earth’s ability to mitigate our presence on this planet. Time, Newsweek and US News and World Report dance around the population issue like a mouse trying to escape a hawk. Charlie Rose, 60 Minutes, Matt Lauer, Diane Sawyer, Harry Smith, Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Charles Gibson, Wolf Blitzer and others avoid it at all costs. Yes, they report its mounting consequences, but they won’t touch overpopulation growth.
Bryan Walsh, Time reporter, September 23, 2009, wrote a sobering column, “How much human activity can earth handle?” But nowhere in his piece did he address the population connection!
Walsh said, “The scientific name is the Holocene Age, but climatologists like to call our current climatic phase the Long Summer. The history of Earth's climate has rarely been smooth. From the moment life began on the planet billions of years ago, the climate has swung drastically and often abruptly from one state to another — from tropical swamp to frozen ice age. Over the past 10,000 years, however, the climate has remained remarkably stable by historical standards: not too warm and not too cold, or Goldilocks weather. That stability has allowed Homo sapiens, numbering perhaps just a few million at the dawn of the Holocene, to thrive; farming has taken hold and civilizations have arisen. Without the Long Summer, that never would have been possible.”

“But as human population has exploded over the past few thousand years, the delicate ecological balance that kept the Long Summer going has become threatened,” Walsh said. “The rise of industrialized agriculture has thrown off Earth's natural nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, leading to pollution on land and water, while our fossil-fuel addiction has moved billions of tons of carbon from the land into the atmosphere, heating the climate ever more.
“Now a new article in the Sept. 24 issue of Nature says the safe climatic limits in which humanity has blossomed are more vulnerable than ever and that unless we recognize our planetary boundaries and stay within them, we risk total catastrophe. "Human activities have reached a level that could damage the systems that keep Earth in the desirable Holocene state," writes Johan Rockstrom, executive director of the Stockholm Environmental Institute and the author of the article. "The result could be irreversible and, in some cases, abrupt environmental change, leading to a state less conducive to human development."
While we multiply our numbers, we degrade our planet-home. But you won’t see any meaningful attention to the root causes!
“Regarding climate change, for instance, Rockstrom proposes an atmospheric-carbon-concentration limit of no more than 350 parts per million — meaning no more than 350 atoms of carbon for every million atoms of air. Before the industrial age, levels were at 280 p.p.m.; currently they're at 387 p.p.m. and rising. That, scientists believe, should be enough to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, which should be safely below a climatic tipping point that could lead to the wide-scale melting of polar ice sheets, swamping coastal cities. "Transgressing these boundaries will increase the risk of irreversible climate change," writes Rockstrom.
“That's the impact of breaching only one of nine planetary boundaries that Rockstrom identifies in the paper,” Walsh said. “Other boundaries involve freshwater overuse, the global agricultural cycle and ozone loss. In each case, he scans the state of science to find ecological limits that we can't violate, lest we risk passing a tipping point that could throw the planet out of whack for human beings. Example: the Mississippi River spews millions of gallons of toxic water into the Gulf of Mexico 24/7 to create a 10,000 square mile dead zone. Toxins include fertilizer runoff, insecticides, herbicides, household wastes, sewage and a host of chemicals. Vertebrates cannot live in it, thus, our poisons created a dead ocean area. As humans’ ultimate toilet, worldwide, our oceans suffer horrific consequences to marine life, plankton and fisheries.
Most Americans cannot ‘see’ overpopulation. And, their leaders fail to address it. Everyone finds it easy to avoid, deny or reject. But day by day, week by week, month by month and year by year—overpopulation impacts every American—and it’s growing worse as we add 3.4 million people to the U.S. annually, predominantly by immigration. Ironically, those immigrants stream into America from overpopulated countries that add 77 million people, net gain, annually to the planet. Next destination: 100 million people added to America by 2035. That’s 26 years from now.

MORRISON, Wis. — “All it took was an early thaw for the drinking water here to become unsafe,” Duhigg reported. “There are 41,000 dairy cows in Brown County, which includes Morrison, and they produce more than 260 million gallons of manure each year, much of which is spread on nearby grain fields. Other farmers receive fees to cover their land with slaughterhouse waste and treated sewage. In measured amounts, that waste acts as fertilizer. But if the amounts are excessive, bacteria and chemicals can flow into the ground and contaminate residents’ tap water.
“In Morrison, more than 100 wells were polluted by agricultural runoff within a few months, according to local officials. As parasites and bacteria seeped into drinking water, residents suffered from chronic diarrhea, stomach illnesses and severe ear infections.”
“Sometimes it smells like a barn coming out of the faucet,” said Lisa Barnard, who lives a few towns over, and just 15 miles from the city of Green Bay.
“Tests of her water showed it contained E. coli, coliform bacteria and other contaminants found in manure,” Duhigg said. “Last year, her 5-year-old son developed ear infections that eventually required an operation. Her doctor told her they were most likely caused by bathing in polluted water.
“Agricultural runoff is the single largest source of water pollution in the nation’s rivers and streams, according to the E.P.A. An estimated 19.5 million Americans fall ill each year from waterborne parasites, viruses or bacteria, including those stemming from human and animal waste, according to a study published last year in the scientific journal Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology.”
As a world traveler, I witnessed what water pollution does to human beings. Waterborne diseases kill millions of people annually. Over 1.5 billion humans cannot obtain a clean glass of drinking water because they live in squalor, near outhouses and human-contaminated water sources.
“The problem is not limited to Wisconsin,” Duhigg said. “In California, up to 15 percent of wells in agricultural areas exceed a federal contaminant threshold, according to studies. Major waterways like the Chesapeake Bay have been seriously damaged by agricultural pollution, according to government reports. In Arkansas and Maryland, residents have accused chicken farm owners of polluting drinking water. In 2005, Oklahoma’s attorney general sued 13 poultry companies, claiming they had damaged one of the state’s most important watersheds.”
“One cow produces as much waste as 18 people,” said Bill Hafs, a county official who has lobbied the state Legislature for stricter waste rules. “There just isn’t enough land to absorb that much manure, but we don’t have laws to force people to stop.”
“In Brown County, part of one of the nation’s largest milk-producing regions, agriculture brings in $3 billion a year,” Duhigg said. “But the dairies collectively also create as much as a million gallons of waste each day. Many cows are fed a high-protein diet, which creates more liquid manure that is easier to spray on fields.
