Cap and trade? Will it work? Not a chance! Screw in a mercury, curly-cue bulb to save electricity! Will that stop carbon emissions? Sorry! Drive a Prius for greater fuel efficiency? Only delays the inevitable! Add more lanes to Los Angeles’ freeways to solve gridlock? That’s like a four hundred pound man facing a heart attack—unbuckling his belt to allow more room for his bulging belly. That’s a tragic choice!
“TEMPORAL BLINDNESS is a limitation in cognitive process. People with temporal blindness cannot gather and process available information into predictions of future conditions. Their processes cannot connect future conditions to a causing behavior.
When their processes do create unpleasant predictions, and identify the causal behavior, they fail to create enough present meaning for the future conditions to motivate a change in that behavior.” Dr. Jack Alpert
In a brilliant essay, Dr. Jack Alpert, www.skil.org, introduced a new concept for Americans to consider: “Why do we need rapid population decline?”
The first question you might consider stems from our civilization that grew population every year for over 400 years. How will you stop that kind of a cultural juggernaut? Simple: either we do it or Mother Nature will! And, Mother Nature always bats last.
“Everyone knows population-increase grows cities and crowds freeways,” Dr. Alpert said. “As a result freeways get wider and cities get bigger. Everyone knows that if city dwellers want bigger cars or houses, cities and freeways grow even if the population doesn’t.
“Hard to grasp is that city growth requires more square miles of ocean and farm land to feed its dwellers. Cities need more water to flush its toilets and water its lawns. Farms need more land and water to feed city people. Cities need more energy to heat homes, run transport and support goods and services.”
Alpert points out that what you see at first glance is not the real problem. Like an iceberg, with 92 percent of its volume below the water, the actual human predicament is 10 times bigger than our first estimate.
“Cities already consume 75 percent of the resources of humankind,” Alpert said. “Farm land is finite. Oil reservoirs, aquifers and rain are finite. Places to put waste are finite. Mined resources like soils and iron are finite.
“There is a whole web of life from bacteria to polar bears that share this finite environment. When humans usurp their space and resources, they are extinguished. Loss of diversity threatens the ecological system.”

“When there are relatively few cities and a lot of unallocated global resources, city growth appears to have no limits,” said Alpert. “But when the support for all these cities equals the environment's abilities to produce, one city must compete with another for scarce resources. Eventually the competition turns into disenfranchisement and conflict.
“Conflict consumes resources. This leaves less resources to support cities. Which increases scarcity. Which increases competition. Which increases conflict. Which diverts more resources away from supporting cities. The circular process causes civilization to experience a death spiral.
“Two possible approaches to keep scarcity of goods and services from triggering collapse of civilization. One increases global carrying capacity with technological efficiency and substitution. The other constrains total human footprint.
“Many people think these dangers can be avoided by a combination of technological expansion and population stabilization. However, even with a cessation of population growth technological expansion is facing a very large task.
“First, because we don't know how close the current human footprint is to the globe's limits. Some would say we have overshot them at present technology and are depleting fish stocks, oil reservoirs, aquifers, and damaging climate.
“And second total human footprint would still continue to grow because 80% of today's global population, the poor, consume at a rate of 1/8 to 1/16 of that consumed by the 20%, who are wealthy. We should expect these have-nots to increase their consumption. If they doubled that consumption every twenty five years, It would take a century or more for them to catch up with the haves and it would quadruple the total human footprint and the technologist's challenge.
“In addition to the poor's increase in consumption the haves will increase their wellbeing. The goods and services required by even a constant population will likely double every 20 years for centuries.
“If we are counting on technology to protect us from the vagaries of scarcity, it will have to double global production of goods and services (with fixed land and less dense energy) every 20 years for centuries.
“Any technological shortcomings will have to be addressed by constraints on total human footprint. At first this might be viewed as capping the excesses of the rich. However, if improved health care increases longevity that increases footprint and it has nothing to do with excesses.
“Since total human footprint is the product of population times per capita consumption, any improvement in wellbeing will have to be matched with reductions in population. Even an improvement in healthcare requires a decrease in population.
“If we expect a doubling of human footprint every twenty years, and technology fails to keep up then the prevention of scarcity must be addressed with a halving of the population every 20 years.
“Rapid population decline (RPD) appears to be "the" path to a viable future for our kids, our nation, humankind, and our ecosystem.
“Rapid population decline (RPD) occurs only when deaths greatly exceed births. The three mechanisms for having deaths exceed births are:
1) deprivation (starvation or disease,)
2) genocide, and or
3) birth rates far below two per woman.
“The challenge that confronts us is, "Can we engineer a future with lesser amounts of RPD caused by deprivation and genocide and more RPD caused by lower births?"
(1) Many answers to the following questions justify a shift in emphasis from current proposals that address visible problems (eco destruction, resource exhaustion and social inequity) to RPD proposals that produce civilization viability.
1. What is the carrying capacity that is divided between humans and other species?
2. How much and how fast can carrying capacity drop?
3. When will carrying capacity drop?
4. If billions are living hand to mouth on a dollar
or two a day, how fast can a doubling of food costs (demand over supply) put billions on a death diet?
5. How long can/will the rich keep the poor from starvation using redistribution?
6. When it is obvious that redistribution will not satisfy the starving hordes and inhibit their social conflict, how long will it be before the rich or powerful resolve their desperation with genocide?
Another question Dr. Alpert asked, “How fast can a lower birthrate reduce the population?"

ALL IMMIGRATION: AN UNWORKABLE PONSI SCHEME BY US CONGRESS

What does a citizen do when the government does more harm than good, more damage than repair and more malfeasance than can be tolerated?
At the present time, our U.S. Congress shoves 160,000 legal immigrants down our throats every 30 days. Month in and month out, year in and year out, decade in and decade out. For what? All the while, we suffer 15 million unemployed Americans and 35 million subsisting on food stamps! Yes, that number proves correct!
Do they know what they are doing? No! Do they understand the implications? No! Do they think about the future? No! Do they take into account our culture, our language, our environment, civilization? No! They drive us in a Faustian Bargain with a final result of forcing us into a Hobson’s Choice.
A dear friend of mine, Washington DC writer Don Collins returned to his old home town south of Pittsburgh, PA for a high school reunion. The town’s size remained the same from 60 years ago. Nice streets, nice homes, nice schools and nice tennis courts.
“After a good visit with an old friend there, he subsequently emailed me a rather poignant note which raised an interesting question,” Collins said.
My friend wrote in part:
"The one big thing I do wonder about in the whole immigration issue is this: What would be the economic result if we were able to stop or drastically slow immigration? I read in The Economist and similar publications that Japan, most European countries (and China) all have enormous problems facing them because of the aging of their populations. All of them have low birth rates within their native populations and few allow or receive much immigration.
“Economic pundits contrast their situations with that of the US which has a relatively young population only because of immigration.
“The countries with low immigration and aging populations are expected to suffer severe problems in funding their equivalents to our Social Security and Medicare with a diminishing number young workers paying into the system and more and more oldsters on the receiving end.
“What would be the solution to funding our Social Security and Medicare if we were able to stop immigration? When I look around Greensburg and Pittsburgh which are ethnically Germanic, Italian, British Isles and Slavic I see a population which is old and tired.
“You can go door to door in Greensburg, as I have with political messages, and find a large majority of retired people. It is unusual in most Greensburg neighborhoods to have a working-age person come to the door. We have almost no Hispanic, Asian or African American population here.
“It is certainly comfortable for me and most of my friends and neighbors to live in such a cocoon, but is it economically feasible in the long run? I would be interested to hear your enlightened view on this problem."
“Good questions,” Collins said. “I sought perspective from a true expert, the Special Project Director at the Federation for American Immigration Studies (www.fairus.org), Jack Martin, and got some thoughts that are at least the beginning of an answer.”
Jack offered these helpful comments:
"Part of the answer is that, along with our greater longevity, we are in better health longer and should be expected to have a longer productive life. If that means working beyond what is currently thought of as retirement age, so be it.
“There are going to be some shrinking pains, to correct for the growing pains we are now experiencing. But, there is not any way to achieve a demographic transition without some pain, and the pain that we should be experiencing is one that leaves a more sustainable future for our descendants.”
“Another part of the answer is that the period of low U.S. immigration from 1925 to 1975 showed that we did not need to have large-scale immigration to have a healthy economy. You might want to look again at the Issue Brief Low Immigration and Economic Growth on FAIR's website.”
“I would also suggest to your friend that he read Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train by Brian Czech. Czech is a biologist and university professor. Publishers Weekly wrote about the book, ‘[Czech] is as good at popularizing economics as Carl Sagan was science.
“Finally, it is worthwhile to read the August 17, 2009 article in the Christian Science Monitor entitled "Is Population Growth A Ponzi Scheme?" Its author, David R. Francis, says that ‘notions that population growth is a boon for prosperity – or that national political success depends on it – are “Ponzi demography,” says Joseph Chamie, former director of the population division of the United Nations.’”
In a September 21, 2009 report on Lou Dobbs Tonight reporter Casey Wian colorfully said:
"The cheapest way to stop global climate change is not converting to solar power or buying a hybrid car. It's putting on a condom. That's the conclusion of a London School Of Economics study showing that money spent on contraception is about five times more efficient than money spent on clean energy technologies.”
As you can see from Collins’ and Martin’s rational thoughts, we, as a civilization, must come to terms with massive, unrelenting and unsustainable immigration. Do you want to place it in an environmental perspective? Quality of life? Energy crisis? Cultural crisis? Linguistic crisis? Water shortages crisis?
You may pick anything you want, but none of the consequences will go away unless we turn off the spigot with a suspension of all immigration for a period of 10 years. After that period, we need a “US Sustainable Immigration Policy” that might allow 100,000 immigrants a year because that many people egress annually. Then and only then, will our civilization be able to survive into the 21st century.

Part 2: $20 PER GALLON: INCREMENTAL ADAPTATIONS TO BASICS

Part 2: A book review
Chris Steiner’s book, $20 PER GALLON, methodically illustrates how American society, in fact, world societies will change as the price of gasoline inevitably rises to $20 a gallon. Many may scream, “What about the 100 years of reserves in the Bakken Fields, or the ocean floor off of Alaska and more fields in the Gulf of Mexico?”
Again, emotions and sheer hearsay drive such hopeful myths. You may call the author a cretin, but the coming rises in the price of a gallon of gas cannot and will not be mitigated by hysteria. Again, as a teenager, I once bought gasoline at 19 cents a gallon in a gas war! If the Bakken fields held such vast quantities of oil as purported—you would see 19 cents a gallon again! Not!
With clever ingenuity, Steiner titles his chapters from Chapter $5 all the way to Chapter $20. He methodically illustrates how each of us will be affected by the costs of a gallon of gas. He advances some positive aspects of bettering humanity as prices rise.
“Oil prices enabled the SUV to thrive, but they will ultimately bury the SUV in its grave,” Steiner said. “Americans will, at long last, embrace diesel when gas reaches $6 a gallon. At the same time, $6 a gallon will mean fewer lives lost to crumpled steel and unyielding pavement.”
Steiner states that people will drive less, slower, smarter and wiser. Already in 2008 with $4.50 a gallon, Americans drove 100 billion less miles than they drove in 2007.
“Assuming the prices are sustained for a year at $4.00 a gallon, that would save 1,000 lives every month,” Steiner said. “That’s 12,000 people annually, almost a third of those killed on U.S. roads every year. At $6 a gallon, 15,600 lives will be saved and at $7 a gallon, 20,000 lives will be saved.” Currently, 44,000
Americans lose their lives on our highways annually.
When it comes to good health, Steiner said that rising prices will mean a trimmer America. Fat people, and America owns the record for obesity at 150 million plus, will walk or ride a bike. Obesity costs Americans $117 billion annually in early mortality and medical expenses.
“High gas prices will clean up our skies, clear our vistas and scrub our lungs,” Steiner said. “$6 gas will spark an infrastructure revolution and the era of widespread tolling. The yellow school bus will disappear from America’s roads. High prices will temper the major league travelling in youth sports. Police will patrol on foot.”
But hang onto your hats! At $8 a gallon, air travel will become quite constricted. In fact, Steiner said, “The skies will empty. When gas inevitably climbs to $8 a gallon, the airline carnage will be vast and it will come swiftly. When gas prices reach $8, airline carries will be throwing down 60 percent of their operating costs to fuel. That cannot be sustained. The ultimate contraction awaits. The airline dinosaurs will meet their asteroid deaths.”
Once the airlines cannot service Las Vegas, Vail, Aspen and Jackson Hole ski areas—as well as many other pricy resorts in the Caribbean—we will see major changes in the economy. When you cannot pay air fare to Disneyworld, those attractions will become extinct. Most college bound teens will see their school choices shrink drastically.
“Gas prices of $10 a gallon may seem far away, but if you look at the fundamentals of the world’s supplies, and the certainty of rising demands, it’s a number we will almost definitely see within the next 10 years,” Steiner said. “At the same time, plug-in hybrids will form the bridge we need to an electric car world.”
A man named Shai Agassi heads up Better Place, a company he founded to solve the logistical riddles facing electric cars in a world and infrastructure built for gasoline. “We don’t have a choice,” he said. “We either do this, or we suffer the catastrophic failures of economic ruin and global climate change.”
Steiner said, “Converting our personal transportation platform from one based on gasoline to one powered by electricity is one of the most imperative measures we will take in shaping a sustainable future for our country and for the global civilization as a whole. This will not be an easy transition. Car ownership will plummet at $10 a gallon. People will end up forfeiting their cars altogether.
Traffic flows on major arteries will ebb and the side effects that began to take hold at $6 gas—fewer crash deaths, less pollution, less obesity—will be firing in full force at $10 gas.”
With rising gas prices, Steiner says we will face another big change: plastics! That pesky invention created the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, trash all over the planet and more gadgets than humans can handle.
Part 3: Finding out what will happen when gas rises from $12 to $20 a gallon. Back to basics for food, for water for living.

$20 PER GALLON OF GASOLINE

Part 1: A book review
At one time, as a kid, I flipped a dime to the cashier to watch Vincent Price scare the heck out of me at a movie. I pulled out a nickel to pay for a Snickers candy bar. I bought a hamburger for 15 cents. I bought a school lunch for 35 cents. When I hit 16 with my ‘57 Chevy, I paid 29 cents a gallon of gas. I gobbled popcorn for a dime while I watched John Wayne in Rio Bravo.
On my office wall, I enjoy a picture titled “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” depicting a Hollywood Diner with Marilyn Monroe sitting on a bar stool, Elvis Presley sneering at me, James Dean scowling into his leather jacket and Marlon Brando standing in a muscle T-shirt—quite handsome I might add!

Today, I bought a $1.69 Snickers at Walgreens. A movie sucked $10 out of my wallet last Friday night as I watched Julie and Julia. I laughed a lot! A hamburger costs up to $5.00 depending on where you buy it. Popcorn at the movies goes for $6.00 a bucket! And gasoline? It hit $4.50 a gallon last year, but remains at $2.55 this summer in Colorado.
Even that’s about to change!
It’s called “Peak Oil” hitting around 2010. Yes, we still enjoy half the world’s oil supply beneath the surface of the earth, but it’s farther down, harder and more costly to drill and it lies beneath the ground of many unstable countries. And, whether you like it or not, the fact is—as the USA burns 20 million barrels per day and the other countries burn another 64 million barrels of oil per DAY, the cost of oil will inevitably rise to $20 a gallon. It’s already $8.00 a gallon in Europe.
Expect everything to change: your life, your city, your state, your transportation means, your speed of life, your food intake, your housing and your way of life.

Why the price of oil will keep rising!
“The sunny “this is merely a passing bubble” outlook—unfortunately for Hummer drivers and the airlines—has taken no measure of world economics, demographics, or capitalism. The following two statements, in most sane circles, are accepted as fact:
1. The demand for oil will gradually increase and will continue to increase as the global middle class expands.
2. The oil that remains in the earth will be more and more expensive to locate and extract.
Those two statements lead us to a third conclusion:

China adds 27,000 cars to their highways every seven days. They expect to burn 98 million barrels of oil PER DAY by 2030. You can verify that number in The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler. As you can imagine, they won’t make it! But neither will we!
M. King Hubbert, famed geologist, projected Peak Oil and decline for the United States in 1970. Indeed, we dropped from nine million barrels daily to three million. We currently produce 2.7 million barrels daily. With the late Dr. Ali Samsam Bakhtiari, director of National Iranian Oil Company, he talked about world oil supply, “After some 147 years of almost uninterrupted supply growth to a record output of some 82 million barrels per day in the summer of 2006, crude oil production has since entered its irreversible decline. It will eventually come to affect everything else under the sun.”
“The United States has now burned through 70 percent of its extractable oil,” Steiner said. “But we’re so desperate that we’re drilling at a pace we haven’t approached in more than two decades: 40,000 new wells a year. But production continues to decline. What’s jarring: the declining production of half of the twenty largest oil-producing countries.”

At one time, as a kid, I flipped a dime to the cashier to watch Vincent Price scare the heck out of me at a movie. I pulled out a nickel to pay for a Snickers candy bar. America's Energy Future Walks a Thin Line

Denver, Colorado--This past weekend, I watched thousands of riders travel to the famed Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota. At one gas station, they piled in line with over 30 bikers waiting to pump gas into their cycles. Over 400,000 motorcycle riders attend the rally annually. Bikes outnumber cars 100 to 1.
If you look at expressways crisscrossing the United States as well as the astounding amount of traffic, I couldn’t help wondering, “What happens when America runs out of oil?” Refer to our incredible use of oil by watching the oil use in gallons ticker: www.willyoujoinus.com
Each day, Americans burn a whopping 20 million barrels of oil. We import 12 million out of that 20 million. On top of that, the entire world of humans burns 82 million barrels of oil every day! To give you an idea of how much oil we burn daily, if you take an oil drum, it measures 20 inches in diameter at the base. If you multiply 82 million times 20 inches, (place 82 million drums side by side), it equals a belt of oil stretching 25,000 miles around the Earth at the equator. We fill them up every day, burn them down and fill them up again to burn them down again. Dr. John Tanton, publisher of The Social Contract at (www.thesocialcontract.com), authored, “How Many is Twenty Million?”
Since it remains a finite resource, how much longer can we burn that much oil at that rate? Answer: not much longer!
How much oil do we burn annually worldwide? If you take 82 million barrels, (that’s 42 gallons to a drum), burned daily—it adds up to a cubic mile of oil annually. It exceeds 29.9 billion barrels of oil annually, year in and year out, decade in and decade out.
In order to drive cars, boats, planes and fuel industry, Americans use 20 million barrels of oil daily while the rest of the world burns 62 million barrels.
If you remember your science, it took two billion years to produce all the oil on this planet. In other words, when oil reserves decline, we exhaust the single major energy source that drives our civilization and most other societies on this planet.
To show how much energy oil provides the U.S. annually, Michael Brownlee of www.transitionbouldercounty.com provided an astounding graph of one cubic mile of oil. That’s how much oil the world burns each year! That equals the same amount of energy provided by 52 nuclear power plants built every year for 50 years or 104 operating coal-fired electrical plants built every year for 50 years or 32,000 wind turbines built every year for 50 years—and in continuous operation—or 91,250,000 solar panels built every year for 50 years.
In other words, oil produces dramatically incredible amounts of energy that we cannot and will not be able to duplicate in the coming years.

You will find it rather sobering. As we add three million people to our country annually via immigration, we burn even more oil faster. As the world population adds 77 million annually, we obliterate all resources faster.
Therefore, what will we do when the oil runs out? Fact: nothing in the world and nothing on the horizon equates to the energy density and output of oil. No technology can duplicate it.
Today, oil user giant China at 1.3 billion population and growing by eight million annually, adds 27,000 cars to its highways every week! Yet, the USA’s leaders and citizens don’t possess the foggiest clue as to what awaits them! We see no conservation policies, no plans, no nothing. Just burn baby burn and drill baby drill!

If we possess the common sense of a Canadian goose, we need to implement massive conservation efforts. We need mandate 100 mile per gallon vehicles worldwide. We need to move toward wind power, water power, sail power, solar and wave power. We need electrical vehicles that run off the sun.
In the end, no matter how much we conserve, we need to stabilize US and world population to live within the carrying capacity of our civilization. We need to move on those actions with great haste! Denver, Colorado--This past weekend, I watched thousands of riders travel to the famed Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota. At one gas station, they piled in line with over 30 bikers waiting to pump gas into their cycles. Over 400,000 motorcycle riders attend the rally annually. Bikes outnumber cars 100 to 1.

Each day, Americans burn a whopping 20 million barrels of oil. We import 12 million out of that 20 million. On top of that, the entire world of humans burns 82 million barrels of oil every day! To give you an idea of how much oil we burn daily, if you take an oil drum, it measures 20 inches in diameter at the base. If you multiply 82 million times 20 inches, (place 82 million drums side by side), it equals a belt of oil stretching 25,000 miles around the Earth at the equator. We fill them up every day, burn them down and fill them up again to burn them down again. Dr. John Tanton, publisher of The Social Contract at (www.thesocialcontract.com), authored, “How Many is Twenty Million?”
Since it remains a finite resource, how much longer can we burn that much oil at that rate? Answer: not much longer!
How much oil do we burn annually worldwide? If you take 82 million barrels, (that’s 42 gallons to a drum), burned daily—it adds up to a cubic mile of oil annually. It exceeds 29.9 billion barrels of oil annually, year in and year out, decade in and decade out.
In order to drive cars, boats, planes and fuel industry, Americans use 20 million barrels of oil daily while the rest of the world burns 62 million barrels.
If you remember your science, it took two billion years to produce all the oil on this planet. In other words, when oil reserves decline, we exhaust the single major energy source that drives our civilization and most other societies on this planet.
To show how much energy oil provides the U.S. annually, Michael Brownlee of www.transitionbouldercounty.com provided an astounding graph of one cubic mile of oil. That’s how much oil the world burns each year! That equals the same amount of energy provided by 52 nuclear power plants built every year for 50 years or 104 operating coal-fired electrical plants built every year for 50 years or 32,000 wind turbines built every year for 50 years—and in continuous operation—or 91,250,000 solar panels built every year for 50 years.
In other words, oil produces dramatically incredible amounts of energy that we cannot and will not be able to duplicate in the coming years.
“As we go from this happy hydrocarbon bubble we have reached now to a renewable energy resource economy, which we must do in this century, will the “civil” part of civilization survive? As we both know there is no way that alternative energy sources can supply the amount of per capita energy we enjoy now, much less for the 9 billion expected by 2050. And energy is what keeps this game going. We are involved in a Faustian bargain—selling our economic souls for the luxurious life of the moment, but sooner or later the price has to be paid.”

You will find it rather sobering. As we add three million people to our country annually via immigration, we burn even more oil faster. As the world population adds 77 million annually, we obliterate all resources faster.
Therefore, what will we do when the oil runs out? Fact: nothing in the world and nothing on the horizon equates to the energy density and output of oil. No technology can duplicate it.
Today, oil user giant China at 1.3 billion population and growing by eight million annually, adds 27,000 cars to its highways every week! Yet, the USA’s leaders and citizens don’t possess the foggiest clue as to what awaits them! We see no conservation policies, no plans, no nothing. Just burn baby burn and drill baby drill!
